The only competition for that position in my lifetime has been Gary Neville and Danny Mills.

Danny Mills was certainly not better. Neville for me never impressed for England, he was solid for sure, but I think Johnson was very good at Euro 2012 and didn't perform horribly at the World Cup either. Neville's only competition that I can honestly remember are Euro 2004 and World Cup 2006 where I can't remember him particularly impressing, but I was impressed by Johnson at Euro 2012.

Mills was awful.

It's probably your age, and I don't mean that in a derogatory sense. Neville was always consistent and was a huge part of the Euro '96 and France '98 squads that were probably the last great England team we had. I struggle to remember any major faux pas, you couldn't even blame him for the second goal against Croatia in 2007. He's easily in the top 5, maybe top 3 English right backs in history.

Maybe it's because I play right back, but I always thought he was a sensational player.
That game (was it West Brom) where he had clearly lost it was one of the saddest moments I remember from football. He didn't deserve that.

Yeah it was Albion. Should have been sent off, Jerome Thomas tore him a new one. I enjoyed watching it.

I think he retired a day later if I remember rightly
He just got burned off all game and made a ton of mistakes
